An explosion of art in all forms and styles erupts in downtown South Bend during the annual Art Beat celebration, where the beat definitely goes on….and on and on! The community’s ode to all things creative celebrates artists displaying their inspired works, dancers whirling onstage, chefs showing off gastronomic wonders, and plenty of kid fun too. The free event takes place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 18.
What started out 16 years ago as a relatively small showcase for local visual, performing and culinary artists in the heart of South Bend, has mushroomed into a panorama featuring more than 800 artists, all from the Michiana area. This signature summer event, presented by the Teachers Credit Union, draws more than 10,000 visitors each year.
As you roam the booths set up throughout the downtown, you’ll find artists in every genre imaginable – painters, photographers, weavers, jewelers, woodcarvers, filmmakers, creators of toys, soaps, and wonderful things made from repurposed materials. It’s a chance to linger at the booths, meet the artists, hear their stories, and learn about their creative process. It makes that piece you buy and take home even more special.
A true “beat” reverberates from four different stages where richly diverse performances delight your ears and eyes and touch your soul. Dancers in colorful costumes glide across the stages in graceful ballets or set the platforms vibrating with African drumming and Zumba beats. Bands and vocalists belt out energetic rock, soulful blues and jazz. Poets and storytellers also take the stage.
The sounds, visual sensations, fun and fraternizing with friends and other festival-goers calls for refueling and reenergizing. The culinary arts are yet another star of the show here, and in the Culinary Arts Village you’ll find an amazing array of creations from local restauranteurs, many featuring locally grown produce. Numerous food trucks offer everything from burgers to ethnic fare to kid-friendly concessions.
Speaking of kid-friendly, part of the beauty of Art Beat is that there is plenty to keep the kids occupied. Children and adults both have the opportunity to touch instruments and try them out. There’s also a Kid Beat section complete with artsy activities and creative projects for children. Make sure to stop and admire the interactive community murals, created by local residents as the 2018 Art Beat Community Project.
It’s a great way to wind down summer before school starts, so join the fun at Art Beat.
