April 8, 2024 is the Great American Eclipse. The path of the total eclipse passes through Indiana, and in northern Indiana it will be 95% to 98% totality. There are a number of places in Indiana’s Cool North where you can learn about the eclipse and view the eclipse safely without battling the large crowds and traffic congestion. Some of the events will have a party going on, and even suggest themed dress up.
Where: 2300 173rd Street, Hammond
When: April 1, 10am to 3pm CDT
The Challenger Learning Center at Purdue Northwest in Hammond offers an opportunity to learn about eclipses BEFORE the big event. On April 1, they will feature 5 shows that will entertain, from exploring outer space to seeing how the Moon and Sun impact pop culture.
Where: 70 Lafayette, Valparaiso
When: April 8, noon to 3:30pm CDT
Central Park Plaza in Valparaiso offers a viewing party from noon to 3:30 pm. The Valpo Parks is joining with the Valparaiso University Society of Physics students to offer educational materials and a safe viewing of the 95% eclipse. Food trucks will be on hand and a limited supply of ISO-certified Eclipse glasses will be on sale.

The Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve in Valparaiso is planning a party atmosphere, even suggesting dressing up in your best sun and moon themed attire. View the 96% cover, and the first 100 people will receive ISO certified viewing glasses.

When: April 8, 2:30 to 3:30 pm
Ox Bow County Park in Elkhart will have a naturalist on hand, as well as a telescope with a sun filter for observing the eclipse in real time.

The Elkhart Environmental Center invites you to view the eclipse at their Solar Eclipse Party from 2 to 3pm on April 8. Themed snacks and music will be provided, along with glasses for safe viewing.

Where: University of Notre Dame
When: April 8, 1-4:30pm
The University of Notre Dame will host an Eclipse Watch Party on the Irish Green from 1 to 4:30pm. Watch the 97% percent of totality on campus, with eclipse glasses available at the event.
