The Indiana Dunes – Immerse Yourself in Nature’s Paradise
Indiana’s Cool North claims one of the nation’s most unique treasures – The Indiana Dunes. The Indiana Dunes is made up of two different parks—the Indiana Dunes National Park and the Indiana Dunes State Park. The Indiana Dunes State Park spreads over 2,000 acres with a swimming beach, nature center, and over 16 miles of hiking trails. The Indiana Dunes National Park is located on both the east and west sides of the state park. It’s a 13,000-acre preserve stretching 15 miles along the coast of Lake Michigan. The park has hiking trails, beaches, and some pretty amazing historical sites. Each park requires a different entry fee or pass to visit.
Enjoy endless days of sunning and strolling along 15 miles of sandy beaches and diving into cool waters. Or hike among the dunes themselves, where waving beach grass and shifting sands sculpt a sweeping spectacle. Some hikers tackle the renowned 3 Dune Challenge, or Diana of the Dunes Dare, climbing some of the tallest sandy peaks. There are 50 miles of hiking trails to choose from in the dunes and farther inland. Devout birdwatchers have come to know the area for the more than 350 bird species that live here or migrate through.
