Winter Outdoor Recreation in Indiana’s Cool North

In the winter months, Indiana's Cool North truly earns its name with a variety of outdoor activities like ice skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. While some activities are weather-dependent, seize the days when conditions align perfectly. Moreover, there are specific ice skating opportunities available that don't rely on snow or cold weather, making them a must-see!

National Park Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing in Miller Woods at Indiana Dunes National Park

Explore the Indiana Dunes National Park’s enchanting three-mile-long Miller Woods trail system, meandering through picturesque oak savanna and dune habitats with complimentary snowshoes. The Paul H. Douglas Center in Indiana Dunes National Park offers free snowshoe rentals every day when there’s a minimum 2-inch snow base.

The snowshoes are adjustable and easily attach to hiking or snow boots.  Definitely wear warm, waterproof boots, as the snowshoes don’t keep your feet from getting snow-covered.

The Loop Trail is perfect for beginners or families with young children.  The trail extensions offers more of a challenge.
